The Egyptian education system, both public schools and Al-Azhar, and other
private education, does require Muslim students to memorize the Koran. In
addition, recitation in mosques for worshipers, especially school children also
plays an important role to encourage citizens to memorize the Koran, said
Minister Zakzouk, who is also the former dean of the faculty of theology at
Al-Azhar University.
